How CarMind Identifies Motivated Sellers
The term "motivated seller" is used loosely in the motor trade. CarMind's scoring engine makes it precise. Every listing is evaluated across five dimensions to produce a motivated seller score from 0 to 100:
- Price vs trade value (40%): How far below CAP Clean the asking price is. A car priced 20% below trade is a fundamentally different opportunity from one priced at trade.
- Days on market (20%): Listings older than 30 days indicate a seller who has failed to find a buyer at asking price. At 60+ days, negotiating power shifts significantly to the buyer.
- Description signals (20%): The seller's own words are the most reliable indicator of motivation. Phrases like "must sell", "going abroad", "any offers", and "priced to go" score heavily. Context matters — our AI reads the full description.
- Seller type (10%): Private sellers score higher than trade sellers. A private individual selling due to circumstances has no margin buffer and no business interest in holding out for full price.
- Price history (10%): Evidence of previous reductions (visible through listing history on Gumtree and tracked data on Facebook) indicates a seller who has already demonstrated willingness to accept less.
Listings scoring above 70 are flagged for instant WhatsApp/SMS alerts. Listings scoring 55–70 are included in your alert feed and email digest. Below 55, the listing is recorded but not pushed — it does not warrant urgent action.
Buy Cars Below Trade Value — What That Actually Means
CAP Clean is the benchmark price a dealer would expect to pay for a car at trade or auction. It's the number used by motor finance companies, insurers, and professional buyers to value used vehicles. Most private sellers don't know what CAP Clean is — they price based on what they see on AutoTrader or what they paid.
Buying cars below trade value means acquiring a vehicle for less than a dealer would pay for it wholesale. Every CarMind alert includes the estimated CAP Clean value for the specific vehicle — year, make, model, mileage — alongside the asking price and the absolute and percentage discount. You know your margin before you pick up the phone.

eBay Motors: unique because of auction listings — a car with a low reserve and one day remaining is a classic motivated seller scenario. eBay's structured data also provides reliable field extraction (make, model, year, mileage) with minimal noise.
